Howe's the Hike?
Canada
Приєднався 23 бер 2017
My identical twin daughters and I started here on UA-cam in 2016 to document our backpacking trips. As the length of our trips grew, so did our content and infamous long form videos :)
In 2023, I was inducted into the Canadian Geographical Society College of Fellows for showcasing remote, backcountry trails to the world. This amazing honour has inspired me to attempt to backpack FULL-TIME, showing you even more remote areas in Canada, the US and hopefully, more of planet earth!
Most of our viewers tell us they use our videos to research their own trips and also turn to us for tips, tricks, advice and more. Details take time, so no, most videos are not "shorts" with quick cuts. You'll experience these epic trails just like we do - 1 step at a time - from the comfort of your own device... (we look WAY better on your 4K TV!)

Entering at upper Bankhead Trailhead, we set ourselves up at Stoney Creek for an approach to Windy Cabin and far beyond. From Windy Cabin, we hiked over Snow Pass to Scotch Camp, found the trail south of the Red Deer river to intersect Elkhart Summit Trail, which took us to the Panther River. From there, we traversed the dormer river to Der Pass and back to Stoney Creek.
We encountered two grizzly bears, two bison, a crazy golden eagle, and much more!
This section of the Front Ranges is rough, rugged and challenging!

Amazing, overnight backpacking trips for anyone! Introducing Backcountry "One Night Stands"
The dead pine forest looks devastated. Unfortunately, I see a fire in its future. Hopefully, it will renew.
Bet you that's the same sow we met with cubs in that meadow last spring!
The X-Mid 1P is bigger inside than you might think. I got it coming off a one-person MSR Hubba NX and it feels like a palace in there. Not as big as a two-person, but pretty big!
Oh I know! It seems like everybody at backpack with has a Durston Tent :-) I have talked to Dan about the one person versus the two person, and he thinks the two person is a bit of overkill for me because his one person is so large. (and the 2 is a TRUE two person) My main concern is that most of the storage area is in the vestibule and there's been a large uptick in porcupine activity on the trails I've been on this year. I will have a at some point, just trying to figure out which one!
Will you post your track Stuart?
Absolutely! Just added it to the description.
Love the skirt Stuart 💚
Ahem - it's a "kilt". ;)
Aha! I was gonna bug you about this on messenger but figured I'd wait for this bad boy. Let me get some popcorn....
On my two trips through Stoney cg I found 2 different groups. One was the girl scouts of Canada out on a trip making sure their leaders knew how to camp before sending them out with the scouts. The next was a group of 8 from Camp Chief Hector. It was educational to hear about some of their backpacks. I had no idea.
Well you can message me anytime my friend! So enjoy the popcorn, but let's talk. When are you and I going to go out and do something? The Internet wants to know!
Phil is the man. He also gave me a ton of Beta on that area when I was going to do it last year. Last minute I decided to do Athabasca pass in lieu. He also picked me up after an epic day hike that he had previously posted on FB so I knew it could be done. Gem of a human being.
Why not use the horse camp at Scotch camp?
That's fantastic! So encouraging to see those groups out there. I love it!
Wow. I’m not sure how I feel about missing that hike last year! Some of it was stunning and I’m sad i didn’t get to see it. Other parts looked frustrating and challenging. Isabelle hiked in Her crocs? That’s incredible. Kudos to her.
Yeah you dodged a bit of a bullet there. This particular section would've been awesome as part of a larger trip like we had planned. But it's a standalone, it was a lot of work for less pay off than most people would endure. That said, I love being out in the middle of nowhere. So this was extremely awesome!
HAHA! I think you dodged a bit of a bullet. As a standalone hike this one isn't quite as impressive as the others in the front ranges, but would've made an excellent add on to our initial plans.
Hey just wondering if ur having issues with leaks In heavy rain ,I saw one video and the guy says it pools water whatare ur thoughts ? I just purchased this tent and waiting to field test it myself .
I haven't had an issue so far, but I haven't had torrential downpours either. That said, given the design, I would be surprised to see it pool water anywhere. I can't comment on anyone else's experience, but typically when something pools water it's due to the way it is set up, often because of uneven terrain for example. I will continue to use this for the rest of the summer and into the fall and do a full review probably in October or November
How long is the summer in Jasper? 3 days?
More like three months minimum at this point!
Hey Stu. Just checking this out. I had trips all planned out for JNP but now I'm coming up with stuff! The crossing you turned back at? That was the one right at the park boundary? I'm honestly pretty interested in that very nice camp site that was there.
Hey Marc! I was supposed to be in Jasper for three weeks as well. I have met lots of people on the trail in Banff and K country who also were supposed to be there... Dolomite Curcuit would be a great hike for you! Dolomite Creek was in flood when we were there simply because the extreme heat was melting the glaciers at a high rate. I know others who have crossed without issues so I think it's just a matter of timing. Would suggest you keep an eye on the Pipestone water levels at Alberta River basins as sort of a guide.
Plus they take away from the peace you seek while hiking. I was on a trail in Alaska and people ahead of me had bear bells on their backpacks. Took away from the sounds of nature.
UGH. I can't imagine!
Would a bear whistle be better?
I would avoid a whistle. This could be mistaken as a marmot or an elk
@@HowestheHike lmao ok I’ll just use a bear horn or sum
Just start singing or calling out with your voice. I would never use an airhorn on the trail because it will make you deaf and you will run out of compressed gas before you lose your voice. :-) I do take an airhorn in my tent at night however, in the rare case that something might be poking around. It would probably scare them enough to allow me to get out of my tent and assess the situation.
I hope you weren’t in Jasper last week and had to get rescued. So sad what’s happening there. Hope you are safe.
Hi Bill, thanks so much for the thoughts! No, I was not. I was in the backcountry of Banff when this happened. It is so tragic and sad. I had planned to be there for the next three weeks but will certainly get there as soon as they reopen to help support some of those local businesses and people who are obviously struggling. It's a strong community and I know they will recover quickly. Hope you are well, as well!
The steam donkey you're showing on day 2, right after you show the chairs at Valencia Bluffs...that's on the leg between the trail head and your first campsite.
Gotcha. I never tire of seeing that old thing!
I always return from Clearwater Pass by hiking up to the bench on the west side of Siffleur Valley, with its lakes and tarns, and instead of crossing Pipestone Pass as you did, heading over to the Pipestone Summit trail. Excellent walking on fine shale, some unique rock formations, and a route by the tarn that's visible from the Siffleur trail. The bump between the Pipestone Pass and Summit is an easy scramble and gives great views in all directions.
I love this idea! Next time I'm in that vicinity I might actually try to plan something where I could do that. Sounds amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Ahh dude, you make me smile.
Thanks Tyler! Hope all is well with you :-)
Unfortunately we did not make it up to Jonas shoulder
Oh no! How come?
That was not part of our plan; we didn't know what we were missing; did the watchtower; then camp parkr to Jonas cutoff/ pass and then paradise valley in Banff; all 3-4 day trips I have seen some of your videos and loved all of them
We only had 16 days to get everything done; did a few day hikes;:parker ridge; bow glacier falls and the saddle back
What a great trip. But no, not a lot of time to get it all done! That said, good for you!
Watchtower is awesome! You've been out there and I appreciate you sharing. And thanks for the kind words :-) I appreciate it!
In1981a friend and I hiked from Nigel pass to Jonas cutoff; camped there and explored Jonas passa little bit; saw large caribou down in the creek was; beautiful area
Oh, I think I just saw your other comment. Now I understand! It is a gorgeous area for sure.
Another great hike, regardless of whether you got to cross the river or not. I'm not a big fan of SIRI but Scott's use of it to take pictures was good usage of it. You need a 'rock cam' now. Jimmy Buffet is turning in his grave. LOL. 👍
Hey thanks! Yeah it was a great trip. You have to make the best of things out there because you never know what's going to happen. Don't even get me started on Siri :-) I have my own struggles with her. I hope Jimmy approves!!
Fantastic video! Glad you guys didn’t run into the Sow and Cubs! Once again, it was fantastic meeting you on trail!
Great to meet you too! She was long gone by the time we went through I guess. Too bad, would've made great video ha ha ha! Stay safe and hope to see you out there again soon :-)
I hope your both safe and sound. Devastating news about Jasper tonight such a beautiful park
Safe and sound. Thank you for your kind thoughts. I am of course devastated with what has happened to one of my favourite places in the world. Heartbreaking.
I hope you are out of harm’s way, as I’m following the Jasper fires in the news.
Thank you so much for reaching out and thinking of me! I am currently in the Banff safe and sound. I wish I could say the same for so many friends and acquaintances in the Jasper area. So so sad.
I hope you are currently safe and far from the Jasper wildfires. My heart breaks at the video footage of the fires that I am seeing.
Thank you so much for thinking of me, how very kind! It IS absolutely heartbreaking. That's the perfect word. I received a Garmin message while in remote Banff front ranges sharing the news. I was sick to my stomach. Still thinking of all the great people of Jasper and hoping for a swift recovery!
You two are too cute together! Loved the ford cam replays lol. Thanks for sharing this beautiful hike and your mosquito song. 😂
Glad you enjoyed it! Scott's a great guy - always a pleasure to be on the trail with him.
Thanks for another great video, Stew. I have plans to be in Jasper in 2 weeks but am super worried about the fire/evac situation there right now. Do you have any last minute suggestions for an alternative route? One of my concerns would be last minute permit issue. 4 or 5 nights.
one of the hikes on my bucket list is grasslands national park backcountry. It's got a darker night sky than Jasper and is rarely smoky. The desert/semi-arid desert is just phenomenally beautiful (as a person who also loves the mountains).
We are all kind of in the same boat at this point. I had planned to be there for three weeks. The Banff area is still in great shape at the moment as I write this. As is Waterton and Kanaskis. At the present moment, although it changes hourly, there is very very little smoke in the Banff and Canmore areas.
@@HowestheHike we were able to grab a permit for the Molar Pass loop. Not ideal dates, but it’ll do. Let’s chat before we arrive this Saturday.
Absolutely!
Wow, thanks for the memory in the picture! It was great meeting you, Evelyn and Olivia on trail Their enthusiasm was infectiious. Helen and I will never forget meeting the three of you and hope to cross paths again sometime in the future. 😀
You are so welcome John! You and Helen will always have a warm place in our memories and our hearts! I do hope to run into you again on the trail sometime soon.
Too bad you didn't make it all the way. We still enjoyed all the beautiful scenery.
Thanks John! Yes it was disappointing and there was a moment there where I thought I might attempt it, but it was only for a split brief second. I knew that there was no way. We still had an amazing time and saw some incredible stuff!
Do the Bob in September when rivers are lowest. Big river crossings preclude going earlier.
Always good advice. I was down there in July however last year and water levels were pretty low. That said, they were low everywhere here in the Banff and Jasper areas as well. Hope to be heading down that way in a few weeks!
Nice Video. did the full loop in 1988. Beautiful country. Thanks for posting.
It would be interesting to know if anything changed!? But I agree, it is gorgeous country! Very very lucky to be able to see it.
Lovely filming and editing my friend! This was gorgeous!
Thank you very much!
How and where can I find this route on Alltrails or another navigation app? Thank you!!! 🙏 😊
I don't use alltrails so I can't speak to what's available on it. I use Gaia. This route is defined in the Canadian Rockies Trail guide and you can also see it on Gemtrek and National Geographic printed maps.
I also believe I posted a link to my Gaia GPS tracks in the description
Is this hike on Alltrails?
I don't know honestly. I don't use all trails.
Yes it is on Alltrails, hope to do this in 2 weeks time...Hopefully the water levels will have come done a bit..
Water is coming down. Not much snow left to melt. Just watch out for the glacier melt on the hot days
great hike video, thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
a A long one... Good!
No kidding! Oh my goodness what a crazy start to the season with all the stops and starts. Finally out there for a long one. Much more to come starting this week.
Fabulous! Love lemonade.
Not too much sugar though!
Your not a bear
That is very very true.
Ive always wondered how on earth a bell would help tell a bear your a human and to stay away. Seems like leaving a dog turd in the garden to lur flies away from the house. Sure ig you got one but is it worth it
That's a funny analogy!
How do you not know that bears have better hearing than you? Twice as good, actually. So 40 ft is actually pretty good and it acts as a great way to give the bear a bit of warning. Most bear attacks happen because the bear is taken by surprise.
Almost all bear attacks are caused by surprise. The bear bell doesn't have enough decibels to be effective in undulating terrain, windy conditions, or anywhere near moving water that makes noise. The worst thing is people think they're doing this job for them, and they are not. I believe they should be banned in places like national parks and other areas where regulations are possible.
I’ve never used them. I was along the roaring South Platte River yesterday where you’d be good to hear a diesel truck horn. Can’t see a bell doing much. Leave the bells for Santa Clause.
! I love this. I just got out of the Siffleur valley with a friend and when either one of us would call out when separated we could barely hear each other in the wind. A bell would be ineffective
I can’t stand the sound of bear bells. Bunch a noobs hiking with them just annoy the hell out of me.
Ha ha ha! Yes they are buying these things at their local outfitter just in case they're ran into you :-) can you imagine walking all day listening to that in the woods? Silliness. hope you are well Bill!
MEC quality has been decreasing since it became a private American owned company...it used to be a great coop :(
I've heard that before and really honestly can't speak to it. Growing up in New Brunswick there really wasn't much exposure to it. I do know however that they were in big trouble financially and may not have survived otherwise. This is not an MEC comment necessarily, but with all of the mergers and things that are going on, I typically see most of the same product line in every outdoor store I go into. At least they have kept up their private label stuff for a little bit of variety!
Going to hike this trail next week with 8 friends! Thanks for the great vid
That's awesome! I hope you all have an amazing time :-)

Another good one!
Reaffirms my contentment that I purchased a $99 tent from Amazon, instead of a tent that retails for $650! This is one of the dangers with any “niche” sport or lifestyle. Eventually, it is taken over by overpriced products. In fact, everything associated with backpacking is overpriced these days. It’s like someone decided even the most basic equipment, like bear bags, water filters, backpack rain covers, etc…things that likely cost just a couple dollars to make in sweatshop in India…should cost $50. I’m currently updating and acquiring equipment for an upcoming multi-day hike in the Wind River Range, and it’s costing me hundreds of dollars…just for the basic things listed above.
At those prices you could buy new gear every year! I haven't given up complete hope, there are still some companies out there that make a good product and try to do the right thing. But I agree that a lot of it's very very expensive for the durability and lifespan you get. Those companies probably will never have my business ever again
Good to have you back on the trail. Single is good. Freedom to do whatever the ____ you want to do. Enjoy the season, will be following you. Not in the creepy way😂🤣😂🤣
Thanks, it's great to be back out! And ha ha, I just make a lot of fun of it! It's nice to be able to plan and go do things spur the moment without owning someone in the process. And no worries, follow away!
m. MEC, 10:55 More or lesser Scaups, Niles
They were beautiful!
Neat, my buddy and I did Saturday Night Lake in 1978. We had a coyote or wolf visit our tent that moon filled night. Relieved itself on our tent fly. You could see it's silhouette crystal clear. It was incredible. Next morning after we broke camp, there came some heavy thumping off in the bush, either someone was trying to scare us, or it was a large mammal.
Wow that's an incredible story! Peeing on your tent! You can't make this stuff up. It only happens in the woods :-) thanks for sharing!
How much did you share the load? Did you carry more than your personal share so they had a lighter load? How did you deal with different food choices? Did you make decisions as a group or did you plan and lead the trips?
These are excellent questions! Thank you so so much. I will absolutely add these to an upcoming video. Thanks again!
